Install and sign in

Get the SalesYatra app onto your Android phone, sign in with your portal account, and allow the permissions it needs.

The app is called SalesYatra on your phone. There is no public sign-up: your administrator creates your account, and you sign in with the same email and password you use on the portal.

Get the app

During the pilot, your administrator gives you the app rather than you finding it by searching the Play Store. They send you one of two things.

Your administrator adds your Google account to the app's list of testers and sends you a link.

  1. Make sure the Play Store on your phone is signed in with the Google account your administrator added. Play uses the phone's main account, which is not always the one you expect.
  2. Open the link on the phone and accept the invitation to test the app.
  3. Install SalesYatra from the Play Store page that opens.

If Play says the item is not found, the usual causes are that the phone's Play Store is signed in with a different Google account, or that you have not been added to the list yet. Ask your administrator to check.

A copy of the app installed from Google Play cannot be passed on to a colleague as a file: opened that way, it sends them to the Play Store instead. Each person installs through their own invitation.

Open the app

Tap SalesYatra. The sign-in screen shows the SalesYatra logo and a card with two fields.

Enter your portal account

Type your work Email and Password, the same ones you use on the portal. Tap the eye icon to check what you typed.

Tap Sign in

The app opens on Home. It keeps you signed in until you sign out, so you do not have to sign in every time you open it.

Reset a forgotten password

  1. On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot password?.
  2. Enter your email and tap Email me a reset link.
  3. The app says a reset link is on its way if the address belongs to an account. It says the same for any address, so nobody can use it to find out who has an account. The link expires in 24 hours.
  4. Open the email on the phone and tap the button in it. Choose your new password in the browser.
  5. Come back to the app, tap Back to sign in, and sign in with the new password.

Sign out

On Home, tap the sign-out icon at the top right, then Sign out.

If you have visits still waiting to sync, the app tells you how many and offers Sync now, and the button reads Sign out anyway. Signing out doesn't delete those visits. They stay on the phone and upload the next time you sign in on it. They are never sent under anyone else's sign-in, so someone else can safely sign in on the same phone.

Sync before you move to another phone. Visits waiting on this one upload only when you sign in here again. See Working offline.

Permissions the app asks for

Android asks for each permission the first time the app needs it, not when you install.

PermissionWhen Android asksWhat it is forIf you refuse
Location, while using the appThe first time you open Start day or Check InChecking that you are at the school, noting where you start and end your day, and noting your position every three minutes during your day while the app is openYou cannot check in from the app, and no location is recorded. Your day still starts without it. At a check-in the message is "Location permission is required to check in at a school."
CameraThe first time you tap Take photo for your odometer or a check-in, or Photo on an order's dealer's orderThe odometer photo, the required photo of the school, and a photo of a paper orderAt a check-in you can still choose a photo from the Gallery, and on an order a Screenshot or PDF. The odometer photo has no gallery, so allow the camera to start a day with your own vehicle. At a check-in the message is "Camera permission is needed to photograph the school. Allow it in Settings, or choose a photo from the gallery."

The app never asks for location "all the time", and records nothing in the background or while it is closed. Location sharing explains exactly when it records your position and who sees it.

The app does not ask to send you notifications, and it sends none. Approval requests and decisions reach you by email.

If Android offers a choice between precise and approximate location, choose precise. A check-in has to place you within the school's fence, which is 100 metres unless your administrator has widened it.

To change a permission later, open Android Settings → Apps → SalesYatra. Turning location off there stops both the check-in reading and the location history.

Keep the app up to date

Some changes to SalesYatra need the newest version of the app, because an older one has no button for them. Until you update, SalesYatra refuses what the older app sends, and says why:

In an older appWhat happens
You check in at a schoolIt is refused with "Start your day in the app before checking in — open Visits and tap Start day.", because an older app has no Start day.
You submit an orderIt is refused with "Attach the dealer's order (a screenshot or PDF) before submitting it for approval. If the app has nowhere to attach it, update the SalesYatra app." You can still save it as a draft, or attach the file and submit it on the portal.
A manager taps Sign off in a Dispatch queue on ApprovalsIt says "Dispatch is now the last step: this order finished when it left the warehouse, and there is nothing to sign off. Update the app to clear this list."

Update the app the way you installed it: from its page on the Play Store, or with a new install file from your administrator.

When a manager taps an approval link in an email on their phone, a SalesYatra page opens first and tries the app.

  • If the app is installed, it opens on the order or plan the email is about. On some phones Android opens the app straight away, with no page in between.
  • If it is not, the portal opens on the same item in the browser a moment later.

The page keeps two buttons on screen, Open in the SalesYatra app and Continue in the browser, in case the phone picks the wrong one. If you were signed out of the app, sign in and it takes you on to the approval you tapped. Approvals covers what you do next.
